This month we want to give you a t-shirt. We’ll send a free BillionGraves t-shirt to anyone who collects and uploads 1,000 GPS-verified* photos before August 31 (anything uploaded from August 1 onward counts).
Collecting 1,000 photos may sound a bit daunting, but it really isn’t. Though your photo-collection rate will vary depending on the types of headstones you’re mapping and environmental factors, about 3 hours spent mapping should get you 1,000 photos. There are dozens of ways to fit those 3 hours into your month.
- Spend 45 minutes each week collecting photos: use your Saturday mornings or spend a lunch break in the fresh air.
- Add 10–15 to your daily commute and collect a small batch of photos every weekday.
- Plan a single, 3-hour weekend morning in the cemetery (be sure to bring a charger for your phone).
1,000 photos is an achievable goal for any of you who have the app: I hope we end up sending out a whole lot of t-shirts when August comes to a close.

>Challenge accepted…
>Maybe a t-shirt for so many transcriptions? Just an idea
>You're on!
>lets git r done
>ooh – i'm going to try too!
>NOT fair to ones that don't HAVE Iphones or such that have GPS.
>@Matt, n_fort, dsw, & Taneya – Good luck, and thanks for collecting!
@Kathy & Jurnie – This is our promotion for August because we're in dire need of work for transcribers. You all are amazingly good at churning through the photos that get collected–this morning we were down to only 200! Right now we want to encourage people to get out and get photos rich with all the information possible (including GPS locations).
Try to get friends or family members with smartphones to come with you to the cemetery (if you have them log in to the app using your credentials, the photos will get credited to you since you're the one who convinced them to go–you can even have more than one person logged in at a time).
Transcribers are doing a ton of work; please don't think you've been forgotten. Stay tuned for future promotions and giveaways: right now we just need more GPS-tagged photos.
>Can't wait to get my shirt!!!
>You know there's a heat wave, right? Just saying…
>I just passed the halfway mark!
And a shout out to the Transcribers…. you guys are awesome, and have a LOT more patience than I do.
>I wish all the bugs were worked out of the Android app for my HTC Inspire 4G. I already talked to support and they are working on it, but I have no idea when it will get fixed so I am kind of worried that I will not be able to support BillionGraves with a free t-shirt. Idk anyone with an Android or iPhone who I think would just let be borrow it for a few hours.
>@Michael – Your phone model is one of a handful of new phones that are causing problems. The Android team is currently trying out all sorts of methods to address the issue. But even if it takes them longer than any of us want it to, this will definitely not be the only opportunity to support BillionGraves.
I still work for Find A Grave but since I found this application I am so excited. Five years ago, I had this idea and set up a website called “History in Stone”. I did not do the GPS portion and it is pure genius.
I find anytime I am out and I see a cemetery, I want to stop to take pictures. Even at 107 with the heat index at 115 I was still out there.
I used to transcribe family history records. Loved it too. I am the director of the Family Search Indexing and this is tool that all of us are adding to is lovely to us genealogist.
Thank you for letting me rant.
More to come. Love it.
